Lorna Thomas-Farquharson has lived in West Hartford for over 17 years.  She grew up on the South Shore of Massachusetts and attended Spelman College in Atlanta, GA receiving her BA in Psychology.  She completed 2 years of clinical research at Boston University School of Medicine before moving to West Hartford to further her education in psychology.  She received her Masters and Doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Hartford.  Soon after, Lorna married her husband Jerome, who works in research and development in the field of material sciences.  Lorna and Jerome decided to remain in West Hartford due to its excellent school system and enjoyable quality of life.  They have two daughters, Julianna and Gabrielle, both of whom are elementary students at Charter Oak International Academy.

Lorna firmly believes in the African Proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” and appreciates that residents of West Hartford and members of our educational system are a part of the village.  For the past three years she has served on the PTO Board at Charter Oak as Parent Representative for the Cultural Council. She also volunteers at the school by chaperoning field trips and participating in school events.  Lorna is a 2016 graduate of the West Hartford PLTI (Parent Leader Training Institute) and appreciates this experience as promoting the importance of servant leadership.  Lorna is also actively involved with her church, Bethel AME Church in Bloomfield, where she serves on the Steward Board and works with the youth department.

In Lorna’s professional life, she strives to educate and empower individuals, couples, and families, so they can address challenges and improve the quality of their lives. She has trained and worked in a variety of clinical settings and finds the work very rewarding.  Community outreach through psychoeducation and open forum discussions is a passion of Lorna’s, especially as it relates to demystifying the stigma associated with receipt of formal mental health care.  Lorna is an experienced public speaker and workshop facilitator specializing in subject matters related to effective communication, workplace etiquette, self-esteem, vicarious trauma, and crisis management.

Lorna wants for all youth in West Hartford to continue receiving the best schooling possible with comprehensive and quality education. She is passionate about youth receiving well-rounded education that allows them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
